Although Sacramento Republic were leading for most of the game with goals curtesy of Rodrigo Lopez (‘6) and Emrah Klimenta (’54), MLS San Jose Earthquakes Chris Wondolowski scored and then equalized (‘74, ‘79), forcing the game into a goalless 30-minute overtime. The penalty shootout resulted in 1-goal over to San Jose (6) over Sacramento’s (5).
Diego Valeri scored the 1st goal of the game for MLS Portland Timbers (‘48). Seattle Sounders Brad Evans was sent off a few minutes after due to a second yellow card for a tackle. Still, Sounders held their ground for most of the mate, and Rave Green Scored equalized for Seattle later in the game (’79). Things go bad for Seattle however, when Obafemi Martins was injured and carried off the field, leaving the Sounders with 9 men. Portland Timbers Rodney Wallace and Maximiliano Urruti scored in overtime (‘100 and ‘116 respectively), with Clint Dempsey and Michael Azira being sent off late in the game, defending champions and to of MLS Western Conference Seattle Sounders left with 7 men and being eliminated from the competition.
Things did not work well at the first half for Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake, as Seattle Sounders 2 looked stronger, and Seattle’s Sam Graza scoring right before halftime (‘45+’4). San Jose came back from the dressing room as a different team, for the better, Joao Plata equalised for San Jose (’63) and less than 10 minutes later, Javier Morales scored the winner for Real (’71).
In the first meeting between Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids and United Soccer League Colorado Switchbacks, Rapids scored 2 goals in the first half by Dominique Badji (’26) and Joseph Greenspan (’32). Still, the Switchbacks did not leave empty handed, and Jordan Burt scored the last goal of the match (’90).
A pretty dull and eventless match between MLS Chicago Fire and USL side Louisville City, ended in Chicago saving face with a single goal in overtime by Fire’s Quincy Amarikwa (‘115).
Major League Soccer side FC Dallas dominated the game against United Soccer League Oklahoma City Energy. With Dallas’ 1st goal scored by David Texeira (’21), followed by 2 from Michael Barrios (’34, ‘36), and ending off with another one from Texeira (51’). MLS Sporting Kansas City’s match against USL Saint Louis FC draw a record crowd for the US Open Cup 4th round (19,298, to top Kansas-Seattle 2012 final count of 18,863). Sadly, the match itself did not amount to the turn up. With Kansas City’s Graham Zusi’s header (’70) being the only goal in the match.
Although MLS Philadelphia Union and USL Rochester Rhinos both gave a good fight, the match was still goalless. Union’s goalkeeper John McCarthy, who was USL keeper of the year for Rochester last season, handed his former club quite a blow, as he stopped 3 of the 4 penalty kicks in the shootout. With Philadelphia scoring 3 penalties vs. Rochester’s 1.
Major League Soccer New York Red Bulls appeared to be back in form, handing a 3-0 loss to North American Soccer League Atlanta Silverbacks. With 1st half goals from Lloyd Sam (‘7) and Ronald Zubar (’15), and 2nd half finish by Sean Davis (’70).
