Saturday, August 29, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y. 4 p.m. ET
Yet another piece of history in the making with this match, with Columbus Crew paying their first-even match in NYCFC’s Yankee Stadium. This is the second time these two MLS sides meet, where the previous meeting took place just ten days ago at Columbus ended at a 2-2 draw.
Hosts NYCFC are still struggling for a playoff position in their inaugural Major League Soccer season. New York are ranked seventh in the MLS Eastern Conference (7-12-7), tied at 28 points with Montreal Impact who are in sixth place. New York is still recovering from last weekend’s disastrous 5-1 at LA Galaxy, where it allowed most goals in a single game since it was founded not too long ago.
Visitors Columbus Crew SC are coming with more confidence, ranked third in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference with 39 points (10-10-4) and coming off the back of an undefeated three-game streak. In their most recent game last Saturday the Crew had beaten Sporting Kansas City 3-2 at home.
The squad stories are what make this game particularly interesting. Which Columbus’s Kei Kamara still holding this MLS season’s Golden Boot standing for leading the season as the top scorer (18 goals). Not far behind is NYFCF’s David Villa, with 15 goals this MLS season.
The younger squad is also of interest, with NYCFC’s Kwadow Poku scoring within a nine-minute span the two goals at Columbus during the teams’ last meeting. Columbus Crew may also introduce their new signing, Argentinian defender Gaston Sauro who arrived at the club earlier this week.
The New York City FC is hopeful that stars Andrea Pirlo and hopefully Frank Lampard (who was not playing at LA due to injury) will be fit to play and hope the club recover from the last disastrous defeat.
