Philadelphia Union FC traveled across the country to LA to meet MLS Western Conference powerhouse LAFC.  What many predicted to be a flat-out defeat for the Union turned out to be a night of back-and-fourth blows with stunning displays of goals from both sides.

Philadelphia did took the lead for the first time half an hour into the match, with Sergio Santos producing a moment and with a beautiful shot from outside the box across scores and puts the visitors into the lead (29’).  This was the first time out of three that Philly took the lead, but the LA hosts kept coming back with goals of their own each time.

The first one for LAFC came from star Carlos Vela, who equalized with a free kick from outside of the box (38’) and equalized less than 10 minutes after the Union’s first goal.

Yeah, Vela’s kick was skilfully executed with precision and cool (that’s Vela’s style after all), but the most amazing goal of the match, and probably the top goal of Major League Soccer’s week 2 overall was scored by Norwegian center back Jackob Glesnes who took a free kick from 40 yards out and found LAFC’s net, to put Philadelphia in the lead a gain (48’) right before halftime.

But LAFC didn’t let the visitors go into the dressing room with a lead, and a minute later the hosts’ Uruguayan forward Diego Rossi made it 2-2 with curled a shot into the far post (49’).

Coming back from halftime, and into the second half Philadelphia Union again took the lead with home-grown midfielder Branden Aaronson scoring off a pass from Santos (69’), and again to be chased and caught by LAFC’s center back Eddie Seguara with a deflection from a corner kick that fond its’ way into the Union’s net (71’).

LAFC are facing Liga MX Cruz Azul in the Concacaf Champions League on Thursday, March 12th, and Philadelphia Union will play MLS Western Conference San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, March 14th.
