Toronto FC vs. Philadelphia Union – Game Recap
Hosts Toronto would have clicked a playoff position for this MLS post season, if it wasn’t for Orlando’s win against Montreal Impact. But Toronto are obviously still in the running for the Audi 2015 MLS playoffs.
Visitors Philadelphia Union on the other hand, will finish their 2015 Major League Soccer Season without a position in the playoffs.
After an eventless first quarter, Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco took a free kick from the right corner of the Union’s box. The ball hit Philadelphia’s defender Ray Gaddis who formed part of a wall, and bounced to the far left of the goal, past keeper Andre Blake (28’).
Toronto FC 1 – 0 Philadelphia Union
Toronto’s Jozy Altidore created another chance early in the second half, but did not score. He did redeem it shortly thereafter, when Marco Delgado passes a cross from the right, to find Altidore on the edge of the 6-yard line, scoring Toronto’s second goal of the match (63’).
Toronto FC 2 – 0 Philadelphia Union
Philadelphia did manage to get on the scoreboard eventually, with Union’s Christian Maidana taking a free kick from almost midfield. The ball was curled into the box and deflected into goal by a header from teammate Steven Vitoria (66’).
Toronto FC 2 – 1 Philadelphia Union
The hosts were not finished yet, and after stoppage time Jonathan Osorio shot a cross from the left into the box. Union’s Richie Marquez was running inwards unluckily kicked the ball into his own goal (92’+1’).
Toronto FC 3 – 1 Philadelphia Union
The hosts dominated the game in every aspect, with 62.7% possession and 21 shots (compared to Philadelphia’s 5). Interestingly though, accuracy was more of a Union quality last night, with Philadelphia’s 3 out of 5 shots on target, compared to Toronto’s 4 out of 21. Still, that was nowhere near enough for Philadelphia.
Both teams are on a bye weekend next, with Toronto returning to host New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, Oct. 14th; and Philadelphia travelling, also to face the Red Bulls, on Monday, Oct. 19th.
