New York Red Bulls vs. Philadelphia Union – Game Recap
Unlike another match last night where D.C. United took some time before firing up to beat the Chicago Fire, the New York Red Bulls wasted no time in starting hand the Philadelphia Union a devastating, end-of-the-season blow.
It actually took New York’s Mike Grella no more than 7 seconds into the game to score the first point of the match. A mistake by Philadelphia right at kick off sent a wondering ball to Grella, who went on to deflect past Union defenders and goalkeeper Andre Blake. Opening what would become a destructive first half.
This game leaves New York Red Bulls as the top seed in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.
New York Red Bulls 1 – 0 Philadelphia Union
A few minutes later, Red Bulls’ Sacha Kljestan took a corner kick that was headed into the goal area by Damien Perrinelle. Bradly Wright-Phillips was there to tap the ball into goal from a close range (4’).
New York Red Bulls 2 – 0 Philadelphia Union
Mike Grella continued his soccer masterclass, by positioning himself inside the Union’s box and receiving a ball from teammate Dax McCarthy. Grella again passed through Philadelphia defenders and positioned the ball on the left corner of the goal area, scoring yet another goal for the Red Bulls (17’).
New York Red Bulls 3 – 0 Philadelphia Union
It was still not enough for the hosts, when Lloyd Sam and Dax McCarthy handle the ball on the right side of Philadelphia’s box, then passing across to Kemar Lawrence who slides and scores yet another goal for New York Red Bulls (44’).
New York Red Bulls 4 – 0 Philadelphia Union
The visitors did eventually manage to put themselves on the scoreboard, with ex Red-Bull’s player Sebastien Le Toux received a ball in the third half from Tranquillo Barnetta.
Le Toux made a run into the Red Bulls’ empty box and was able to go pass a lone New York defender to score Philadelphia’s first and only point of the match (55’).
