NYCFC hosted at Yankee Stadium Columbus Crew SC for the second time ever these two teams meet. The teams met last in August 19th at Columbus, where the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Although the teams were tied for most of the match, a late goal by Columbus’s substitute Justin Meram gave the hosts the win, and pretty much put a serious dent into New York’s playoff hopes.
Many expectations were hanging on NYCFC’s star-studded lineup that included a Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo starting in the midfield, and David Villa at the front. For some reason, Kwadwo Poku was not in the starting lineup.
Although NYCFC had slightly better ball possession, most of the game took place in New York’s half, with New York’s goalkeeper Josh Saunders being busy all night fending off Columbus Crew’s attacks.
New York’s midfield was a bit chaotic, and a mistake from Andrea Pirlo of all players gave Columbus an early lead. Crew’s Will Trapp took a corner kick, and Pirlo who was next to Federico Higuain took his eye off the ball, allowing Higuain to head in the first goal of the match (10’).

New York’s Andrew Jacobson scored his first goal for the club, and gave his team an equalizer. Patrick Mullins chested the ball to Jacobson, who stabilized it and sent a powerful, low show from afar, to find the Crew’s net (29’).

Although creating several chances and not having an organized defense, NYCFC did hold up and nearly finished the night with yet another draw.
However, Columbus Crew’s Justin Meram had other plans. Meram, who came on in the 57th minute received the ball from Federico Higuain and started advancing into the box from the left. New York’s defense did not close on him fast enough, allowing him to take a low shot across to the far corner, scoring the winning goal for Columbus (83′).

Unfortunately for New York City FC, the world’s top talent doesn’t seem to be enough. Tonight showed that there is still a long road ahead before this MLS expansion side will become a solid, cohesive team.
Both teams will face FC Dallas in their next MLS league game. Columbus at home on Sept. 6th and NYCFC away at Dallas on Sep. 12.
