Philadelphia Union vs. Seattle Sounders

Thursday, June 25, 2015

It takes just one flop by a team leader (Clint Dempsey with his stupid run-in with the ref in the US Open Cup against Portland, now costing him 4 suspensions from Major League Soccer games, and a 2-year ban from the US Open Cup), for the entire team to go tumbling down.  Seattle’s position in top of the table in Major League’s Soccer Western Conference seems like a fading memory of a team that has left the building.

Starting with a new formation due to a different squad, Sounder’s boss Siegi Schmid25 included 3 rookies in his 4-2-3-1 line up.  Changes didn’t help much, as Seattle barley imposed any risk on Philadelphia Union, with only 2 shots on target during the entire night, both to be declined by the Union’s very impressive defense, and goalie Brian Sylvestre (on loan from NASL Carolina Railhawks).

Things could have gotten much worse for Seattle Sounders, if not for their keeper Stefan Frei, who made several impressive saves, and most of all saved a penalty kick from Maurice Edu.  As for the penalty, in Clint Dempsey’s recent fashion, another stupid, cynical foul.  With Sounder’s Dylan Remick with a high kick to the face of Union’s Andrew Wenger inside the box.

The better team of the night still won, with a great goal by C.J. Sapong (69’).  It is his 6th of the season.
