Toronto FC vs. Montreal Impact

The bitter rivalry of this Canadian Darby Was Dominated by Toronto

Thursday, June 26, 2015

The match actually started with anticipation of Montreal giving their Canadian neighbours Toronto some sort of a fight.  Both Canadian sides are member teams of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.  With hosts Toronto ranked 3rd and Montreal 8th this MLS 2015 season.

Toronto are by far the favourites coming into this MLS match.   Mainly due to their diamond formation attack with Sebastian Giovinco on the right, Michael Bradley at the centre and Jozy Altidore left.  Montreal’s reply was their most common formation from recently, of 4-2-3-1 with Jack Mclnerney up front.

The surprise of the match was actually the first goal, not only that it was scored by Montreal, but also the fact that the first scorer of the match was defender Ambroise Oyongo; who transferred from New York Red Bulls in January, and this being his second MLS season, and his first goal in Major League Soccer (19’).  A great assist from midfielder Ignacio Piatti who was able to distract 3 Toronto defenders, send across to Oyongo for a beautiful finish.  It seemed as if Montreal Impact is set to make an impact tonight.

However, glory was short lived, as hosts Toronto soon started capitalizing on their form, possession and attacking front.  Starting with Michael Bradley’s equalizer (27’), with a fantastic assist from Sebastian Giovinco into the centre.  Followed by the same Michael Bradley with an assist this time, Jozy Altidore to score the home side’s 2nd goal of the match (56’).

Atomic Ant Sebastian Giovinco did make a few attempts, and was either blocked by Montreal’s defense or denied by the woodwork (58’).  But eventually Giovinco also got his chance to score and put his name again on the MLS scoreboard.  As he was tripped in the box, Giovinco won a penalty kick and scored (81’), sealing the win for Toronto.
