New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew SC – Game Preview

Hosts New York Red Bulls are coming on the back of a 5-2 defeat at home to Orlando City SC last Friday – the most goals conceded by the Red Bulls in a match this season.  The month of September also had a 3-2 home win over Chicago Fire, a 2-1 defeat at New England Revolution and a 2-0 win at Portland Timbers.

Still, the Red Bulls are on top of the MLS Eastern Conference with 48 points (14-9-6) and are the first team this season to clinch a playoff position.

Visitors Columbus Crew started September with a 3-0 home loss to FC Dallas, on to two 2-1 away wins at Philadelphia Union and D.C. United, and then again conceding a 2-1 loss at home to Portland Timbers last Saturday.

Columbus are ranked third at Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference (13-12-8) and are tied at 47 points with second-placed New England Revolution.

All eyes are set on New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips, Lloyd Sam and Mike Grella (with 14, 8 and 7 goals this season respectively.  And on Crew’s MLS Season top-scorer Kei Kamara (22 goals), Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain (9 and 7 season goals respectively).

The teams are meeting for the third time this season, each claiming a 2-1 win once.  The last time Columbus won at Red Bull arena was a 3-1 win last October.
